Jessica Hubley COFOUNDER
Jessica Hubley, AnnieCannons CEO, earned a BA and MA from Emory University and a JD from Stanford Law School. Jessica built a legal career at Latham & Watkins LLP and Dickstein Shapiro LLP before opening her own firm, which advised emerging internet, cloud, and digital media companies on general commercial matters, with a particular focus on privacy issues, IP management, and distribution strategies. She served as General Counsel and Chief Privacy Officer at Stride Health, Inc. After years as a lawyer helping software products implement privacy and security by design and helping software consultancies communicate more effectively with their clients, Jessica modeled AnnieCannons’ Impact Agency, a software consultancy that is optimized for women and minorities’ success, to provide the same value for AnnieCannons’ clients. Jessica is also a gallery-shown painter and writes novels. She was introduced to the global issues of human trafficking several years ago through her work as the President of Women of Stanford Law, and met AnnieCannons cofounder, Laura Hackney, while working on a narrative nonfiction piece that highlights the stories of trafficking survivors from around the globe and how existing technology could be leveraged to help them. Jessica has grown the Impact Agency’s revenue consistently since 2016, and continues to lead the strategic execution that will make AnnieCannons a self-sustaining enterprise for social change by 2022.
Laura Hackney CEO + COFOUNDER
Laura Hackney, Cofounder and Chief Technical Officer, leads our technical and instructional teams. Laura is a full-stack software engineer and oversees the technical aspects of all student and client development projects. Additionally, Laura oversees our coding training program as an instructor and curriculum developer. Prior to AnnieCannons, Laura managed the Program on Human Rights at Stanford University’s Freeman Spogli Institute. She also worked as the Senior Research Associate for Stanford’s Anti-Trafficking Project in the Mekong Sub-Region and was a Program Associate for the Freeman Spogli Institute’s International Policy Implementation Lab. Laura is passionate about the intersections of human rights, technology, and education. She worked with the San Francisco Police Department's Special Victims Unit, serves on Alameda County's AC United Steering Committee, and supports the local Bay Area anti-trafficking groups. Laura gained her undergraduate degree from the University of California, Berkeley and her International Policy Masters from Stanford University.
Julie Walsh INTERIM DIRECTOR OF PROGRAMS
Julie is a radical, queer, polyam, survivor with a rich history working in nonprofit leadership, program development, and education. Their commitment to social justice has resulted in extensive work with LGBTQ+ communities, people living with HIV, and historically underserved youth. They founded and formerly directed GenderNexus - the first organization dedicated to transgender wellness in Indiana. Julie holds a BMEd, an MSW, and is actively completing their doctoral dissertation.
Alex Richardson DEVSHOP MANAGER
Alex has a background in providing healing-centered program management and services for nonprofits around the world. Her expertise is in working with survivors of violence and immigrant and refugee populations. Alex has her Master of Social Work from Tulane University and has supervised numerous social services teams. Prior to joining AnnieCannons, Alex served as a program manager at Tahirih Justice Center, the San Francisco AIDS Foundation, YWCA Silicon Valley, and the Violence Prevention Institute at Tulane University. Alex's international work is extensive and includes providing trauma-informed training for organizations fighting gender-based violence in Uganda, Greece, and the Middle East, as well as her work on a Department of State Trafficking In Persons project in New Delhi, India. Alex is also an avid skier, dancer, choreographer, musician, mom of three, and loves exploring her home on the West Coast.
Elizabeth Gardner INTERIM CEO + COO
Liz Gardner leads organizations and programs that improve human welfare, influence policy making and train future generations of leaders in the United States and internationally. She held executive positions in Stanford University's international studies institute and is the co-founder of an activist alliance working to elect liberal and progressive candidates across the U.S. She holds degrees from Stanford and Georgetown.
Da'Kirah Jenkins TECHNICAL LEAD
Da'Kirah Jenkins, a Technical Lead with AnnieCannons, brings 5+ years of experience with HTML5, CSS3, JavaScript, ES6, React, React Native, Vue.js, and Wordpress. Da'Kirah brings qualified technical expertise to building responsive websites, web apps, and mobile apps for a range of businesses, including tech startups, non-profits, and established industry leaders. In addition to her development work, she also oversees teams of developers within AnnieCannons as one of our Technical Leads.
Barbara Berry DATA PROJECT MANAGER
Barbara Berry manages Data Quality as a Service (DQaaS) projects for AnnieCannons. After studying at Merritt College and learning to code, she joined the AnnieCannons' staff to ensure tight procedural efficiency in AnnieCannons DQaaS work. Prior to and during her time with AnnieCannons, Barbara has given her time to help others at organizations like GOALS for Women and the General Assembly of Alameda County. Barbara has also held roles in caregiving and nutritional management for Kindred Healthcare.
Jakki Bedsole REFERALL PRODUCT MANAGER
Jakki Bedsole is AnnieCannons' Product Manager for ReferAll, a mobile platform for survivors of trafficking dedicated to generating exit-ramps from exploitation. As an activist in the local and national anti-trafficking movement, Jakki has served in a multitude of roles. She has been a direct service provider working with vulnerable populations, a researcher and writer speaking to the prevalence of and disparities among domestic sex trafficking survivors, a public speaker and trainer educating communities about trafficking and gender-based violence and a nonprofit leader overseeing program delivery and leading in the areas of program, organizational, fund and team development. Jakki holds a B.A. in Sociology, a Masters of Social Work (MSW) and is a front-end software engineer dedicated to building power among marginalized communities through the development of social impact technology.
Sonam Patel PRODUCT MANAGER
Sonam Patel, a Product Manager, received a BS in Molecular Cellular Biology from the University of Illinois with ambitions to work in medicine and social healthcare. After graduation, she embarked on an alternative career in healthcare consulting and transitioned into large scale release management in the banking sector. She has contributed to digital teams for both small and large consulting organizations, within both strategy & advisory services and IT implementation. She is passionate about social justice, underserved communities, and LGBTQIA+ issues as they pertain to minority groups and South Asian youth. She hopes to find and maintain space for these issues within the tech landscape.
Erina Mitich DEVELOPMENT & EVALUATION MANAGER
Erina is an international development and humanitarian professional specializing in program design, development and quality for NGOs, with a focus on gender equality and girls’ rights. She has worked on multi-disciplinary projects in Africa, Asia and the Americas, including most recently on advancing education access and quality in Southeast Asia. Erina holds a postgraduate degree from American University and B.A. from UC Irvine.
Gloria Ng LECTURER
Gloria Ng currently serves as a Lecturer at AnnieCannons. Gloria has spent several years teaching youth in the Bay Area, including severely disadvantaged youth with special needs. Her empathy in helping those who have faced adversity to learn is complemented by sharp technical skills and an incredible work ethic. Together, these qualities make Gloria a key element in the growth of AnnieCannons’ training program.
Catie Hart LECTURER
Catie Hart currently serves as a Lecturer at AnnieCannons and holds a Bachelor’s degree in Sociology from the University of California, Berkeley. Catie began her teaching career leading workshops for service providers and activists in the anti-trafficking space, helping these students to cut through the noise and access resources that empower and engage using tangible methods and tools. She is often recognized for her work as a survivor leader as well as a trainer. Catie’s deep experience with the fight to both understand and end human trafficking adds a material layer of trauma-informed curriculum management to AnnieCannons' classroom.
Roberta De Oliveira Pinto TEACHING ASSISTANT
Roberta or as she likes to be called, Tia, is a junior developer for AnnieCannons and has recently embarked on the role of teaching assistant as well. Roberta has worked with a nonprofit that helps prepare with at-risk youth obtain the skills to be prepared for the workforce. Although she’s worked in various fields, she is aspiring to become a full stack developer and potentially a lecturer for AnnieCannons. She is originally from Brazil and fluent in English, Portuguese, and Spanish and has two beautiful children and an adorable dog.
Magical Sparkles ASSOCIATE TEACHING ENGINEER
Magical Sparkles is a software professional and associate teaching engineer with the AnnieCannons teaching team. As an aspiring full stack developer, Magical believes education is a form of liberation and is passionate about curriculum development that nurtures the prosperity of one’s own brilliance. Having an educator background with grades K-12, she is excited to expand her teaching abilities to incorporate coding and computer literacy. She has contributed to student learning in partnership with West Contra Costa Unified school district, Oakland Unified school district, The Alameda County Office of Education and several local non-profit organizations serving the needs of youth. Magical is honored to be part of the teaching team and looks forward to supporting students achieve their coding ambitions to thrive in the world of tech.
Iram Shaikh REFERALL UX RESEARCH COORDINATOR
Iram is AnnieCannons’ UX Researcher and Partnerships Coordinator for the ReferAll app, a mobile platform for survivors of trafficking dedicated to generating exit-ramps from exploitation. With a background in education and business analysis, Iram has extensive experience cultivating partnerships with stakeholders, working in agile environments and using strategic thinking to inform her work. Iram currently uses qualitative and quantitative research to inform product design, strategy and goals, helping to unblock and inspire product teams to build thoughtfully. She is passionate about designing experiences informed by data and driven by empathy. She also manages and maintains all nonprofit partners to the app, helping them make successful connections with people using the platform.
Mercedes Tseung ASSOCIATE TEACHING ENGINEER
Mercedes has nearly as many nicknames as she does interests. Some of those nicknames include ‘Sadies,’ ‘LadySadies,’ ‘LS,’ ‘Top of the line,’ ‘Benz,’ and ‘Starfire.’ She graduated from the University of California Berkeley where she conducted original research for an honors-worthy thesis on the social media hashtags “Adulting” and “Adulting is hard.” She holds a B.A. in Interdisciplinary Studies Field, with anthropology, sociology, and linguistics as focus disciplines. Following university graduation, her interests expanded to include learning to code. As a member of the Teaching Team at AnnieCannons, she combines insights collected across diverse fields to bolster the curriculum and learning experience.
